Designed to resemble a North African citadel with sandstone turrets rising from a luxuriant garden of tropical flora and palm trees, the property covers a vast surface area yet the design creates a sense of intimacy and privacy by incorporating hidden gardens and quiet corners. Pleasant, casual atmosphere; not at all stuffy.

Colonial-style with contemporary artwork, offering generous floor space, enormous comfortable beds and elegant en-suites. Large balconies are completely private and a romantic spot from which to watch the sun set behind La Gomera. Villas offer more privacy and seclusion, and those who can afford it should opt for a Tagor Villa with complimentary poolside snacks and drinks, butler service and a dedicated golf buggy.

The hotel’s 10 restaurants offer a high standard of dining, and menus ranging from traditional Canarian to Argentinian. At the top end, there are two Michelin-starred options: MB, the signature restaurant of the Basque chef Martin Berasategui, and Kabuki, managed by executive chef Daniel Franco and specialising in Japanese fusion cuisine.

Double rooms from €198 (£165.50) in low season; rising to €337 (£282) in high season, breakfast included. Wi-Fi is free up to a limited broadband width, then it costs €25 (£21) per day to upgrade. Not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. On the plus side, access to a plethora of facilities, including the Ritz Kids' Club, is included in the room rate.
